~ Heaven ~

Heaven did as Cael asked. The following night, he tossed a bottle over to Cael and slumped down onto the chair, closing his eyes and letting his mind rest.

“It’s good seeing you again, Lily,” Heaven said through the bars.

She looked as beautiful as ever.

“How do you know my name?” she asked, walking over closer to him.

“I know everything.” He smiled at her, his lips turning into an upside-down arch.

“Are you God?”

Heaven laughed, his head tilting back when he did. “No, but I am one of his right-hand men and, specifically, I’m in charge of overseeing the human world, your world.”

She raised her right brow. “I don’t believe you. In charge of the human world? Who exactly are you?”

“I’m your guardian angel.” As if to prove his point, his ethereal wings extended from his back.

And just like that, Lily faded away again.

“This is ridiculous!” Heaven sprung out of the chair and towered over Cael, who was blissfully chugging away at his present. “There has to be a better way, a longer way to stay in communication with her. There has to be!”

“There is,” Cael replied casually, “but you may not like it.”

“What is it?”

“Go to the human world.” Cael paused, as if letting him soak up the words. “There, you can communicate with her all you want without the fear of waking up.”

Heaven shook his head. “You know I can’t. If I go against the council, I’ll be excommunicated from the City of God forever, banished! I can’t! Losing my place was enough; I have already been taken out of my dutiful job and made a mere overseer of words. If I go against them again, they will banish me, no doubt!”

“Suit yourself.” Cael shrugged, completely unconcerned. “But it’s either that, or continue having these meaningless conversations that go nowhere. How much can you really do to protect her, anyway? She’s all the way down there, and soon, she’ll either burn in flames or get murdered by one of her own kind. Unless you’re down there with her, there’s not much you can do.”

Cael had a point, as much as Heaven hated admitting it. But he couldn’t go against the council without facing serious consequences. There was nothing else he could do other than warn her. Her impending doom was inevitable anyway, wasn’t it? Her world was burning and, pretty soon, Lily and everyone else down there would be dead.

He retreated back to his home, and once on his throne, he grabbed a bottle off the marble table. The warm liquid trickled down his throat and temporarily washed away his pain.

“What’s the point? I’m stupid to even think I could do anything to help her.”

Gabriel then knocked on his door, yet another platter in his hands.

“How’d it go? Did you find him?”

“Yeah, yeah, I did. But it wasn’t what I was expecting. It’s hopeless. Not really much I can do from way up here. I guess I’ll just have to sit and wait for her to die in God’s flames.
